The principle of car muffler

Nowadays, severe noise pollution has attracted widespread attention. One way to solve this problem in the automotive industry is to install a muffler. The working principle and function of car mufflers are to use appropriate combinations of cavities and pipes to achieve two functions of promoting noise reduction.

According to its working principle, mufflers can be divided into resistive mufflers, resistive mufflers, and impedance composite mufflers.

1、 Resistive muffler

The resistance muffler mainly uses sound-absorbing materials to reduce noise, which are fixed on the inner wall of the airflow circulation pipeline or arranged in a certain way in the pipeline. When sound waves enter the muffler, most of the sound energy is absorbed and plays a silencing role. The advantage of a resistance muffler is that it can eliminate sound over a wide range of medium to high frequencies, especially for high-frequency sound waves. The disadvantage is that it has a shorter service life in high-temperature water vapor and gases that corrode sound-absorbing materials. Usually used for home, office air conditioning, large wind tunnels, jet engine testing laboratories, and other places.

2、 Resistance muffler

Resistance mufflers, also known as acoustic filters, are divided into resonant, expansion, and interference types. A simple type of expansion chamber is to connect a thick pipe with a larger cross-section on the airflow channel pipeline, but its terminal is a thin pipe. By adjusting the cross-sectional length of the expansion chamber (large pipe), the reflection and interference performance of sound waves can be changed, thereby changing the sound attenuation amount and frequency. Unlike the resistance muffler, it does not have sound-absorbing materials placed. The resistant muffler has a simple structure, high temperature resistance, gas erosion resistance, and good low-frequency noise reduction performance The disadvantage is that the noise reduction band is narrow, mainly used for the intake and exhaust ports of piston engines such as automobile engines.

3、 Impedance composite muffler

Impedance composite muffler is made from the first two advantages. There are both resistive sound-absorbing materials and resistive filtering elements such as resonant cavities and expansion chambers, which have good noise reduction effects over a wide frequency range.

Car mufflers have two functions;

One is to use the sudden change in pipeline cross-section (i.e. acoustic impedance change) to reflect the sound waves propagating along the pipeline back to their original location as an echo source;

Secondly, by utilizing the reflections of several interfaces, a forward propagating sound wave can return to its origin and propagate forward again. This is combined with the second forward propagating sound wave that has not yet been reflected, with equal amplitude and a phase difference of 180 degrees, interfering and canceling each other out.

The working principle of car muffler

The exhaust pipe of a car muffler consists of two pipes of different lengths, which are separated first and then meet. Due to the length difference between the two pipelines being equal to half the wavelength of the car's sound waves, the two columns of sound waves cancel each other out when overlapped, reducing the sound intensity and minimizing the sound, thus achieving a soundproofing effect.

Engine noise mainly includes combustion noise, mechanical noise, intake and exhaust noise, and noise from cooling fans and other components. In order to reduce combustion noise, it is necessary to improve combustion conditions and enhance combustion quality to achieve smooth pressure waveforms. Effective combustion is achieved through the rational arrangement of spark plugs and valves, as well as the use of appropriate combustion chamber types and cooling methods. In terms of fuel, the higher the octane rating of gasoline, the better the ignition quality and anti knock performance For mechanical noise, while ensuring that the engine output power does not decrease, the intake and exhaust noise can be reduced by improving the engine valve or exhaust mechanism.

Paper air filters and exhaust car mufflers are currently widely used and can significantly and effectively reduce intake and exhaust noise.

The current solutions for vibration noise include:

① Vibration reduction treatment. Mainly used for vibration sources to reduce the amplitude of vibration waves;

② Vibration isolation treatment. Installing isolators through the transmission of vibration waves to reduce vibration sources;

Damping treatment. Modern structures are mostly complex multi degree of freedom systems with broadband excitation, and increasing damping can effectively suppress vibration. The commonly used processing methods are damping free layer and constraint layer.

To reduce the noise of high-speed engine fans, fans with hydraulic couplings or variable torque angle can be used, or water temperature sensing electric clutch fans can be used. Changing the fan material to nylon also has a certain effect on reducing fan noise. Solving automotive engine noise is a technical issue involving various aspects of the entire machine, including engine structure, materials, quality distribution, process level, assembly sealing, etc. The active measures taken by manufacturers in the structure of automobile engines include: adopting vibration absorption and sound insulation technology, improving the structure of automobiles, installing sound insulation panels and mufflers within a certain distance, and improving the structure of automobile mufflers using rear suspension engines.
