What is a muffler?
Answer: A motorcycle muffler is a device that allows airflow to pass through and reduces noise, and is one of the important components of a motorcycle. The performance of a muffler not only affects the noise of a motorcycle, but also has a significant impact on the power, fuel consumption, torque, and other performance of the engine. Therefore, it is necessary for every motorcycle user to understand the noise reduction principle, structural types, and maintenance knowledge of motorcycle mufflers.
1. Types of mufflers.
According to different principles of noise reduction, motorcycle mufflers can be divided into the following three types:
1. Resistive muffler.
This type of muffler utilizes the sound absorption effect of sound-absorbing materials or structures to attenuate the noise propagating along the pipeline with distance, thereby achieving the purpose of noise reduction. Commonly used sound-absorbing materials include fiberglass, low-carbon steel wire mesh, felt, etc. This type of muffler has a good noise reduction effect on high-frequency noise, while its low-frequency noise reduction performance is poor. In addition, due to the fact that sound-absorbing materials are easily melted by the high-temperature exhaust gas emitted by the engine, have a short service life, and are easily clogged by carbon deposits and sludge, reducing or losing their sound-absorbing effect, a single resistive muffler is rarely used for motorcycles.
2. Resistance muffler.
This muffler utilizes the sudden expansion (or contraction) or adjacent resonant cavity of the pipeline cross-section to reflect certain frequencies of sound waves propagating along the pipeline towards the direction of the sudden sound source, thereby achieving the purpose of noise reduction. More suitable for eliminating low and mid frequency noise, with poor noise reduction effect on high-frequency noise.
3. Impedance composite muffler.
This type of muffler combines the sound attenuation principles of a resistive muffler and a resistive muffler through appropriate structural combinations, possessing the sound attenuation characteristics of both. Due to the wide frequency band of noise generated by motorcycle engine noise sources, in order to achieve better noise reduction effects in low, medium, high, wide, and edge ranges, most motorcycles choose this impedance composite muffler, such as the Nanya NY125. Honda CBX250, etc.
2、 Regularly maintain the muffler.
Due to engine operation, fuel is not completely burned. In addition, the fuel also contains certain impurities. Therefore, when the high-temperature exhaust gas emitted by the engine passes through the exhaust muffler, carbon deposits will be generated on the cylinder core and partition of the muffler. Over time, carbon buildup can block the airflow channels, increase exhaust resistance, reduce noise reduction performance, and affect normal vehicle operation. In severe cases, it can cause the exhaust pipe to turn blue and the engine temperature to become too high, resulting in damage. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly maintain and clean the motorcycle muffler. Under normal circumstances, carbon deposits on the muffler and cylinder core should be removed every 3000 kilometers or so. Every 6000 kilometers, the exhaust pipe and muffler should be completely removed, and carbon deposits in the cylinder exhaust port and exhaust pipe should be removed.
Taking the NY125 motorcycle muffler as an example, the cleaning method is as follows:
(1) Loosen the two M8 nuts on the engine exhaust port;
(2) Loosen the fastening screw sleeve;
(3) Unscrew the M8 × 16 bolt for installing the muffler under the main frame;
(4) Remove the M10 × 25 bolts from the muffler and mounting plate;
(5) Remove the exhaust pipe and muffler, unscrew the three M6 × 16 screws at the tail of the muffler, and take out the cylinder core.
(6) Soak the exhaust pipe, muffler, and cylinder core in gasoline or kerosene for 5-10 minutes, then clean the carbon deposits in the cylinder core, exhaust pipe, and muffler with a steel brush. After the gasoline evaporates, install it on the car in sequence as it is, tighten the screws and nuts, and it can continue to be used. The maintenance of other types of mufflers can be carried out using this method.
